How to play the typing race
- Choose your Opponent: Race my ghost or Beat the clock.
- Pick a Race length: Sprint (a few sentences), Standard (one paragraph) or Marathon (two paragraphs), and the Text language (English or French).
- In clock mode, also choose a Clock speed, from 20 to 120 WPM.
- Click in the typing box and start typing the text shown above it. The race starts with your first key, and your car moves forward with every correct character.
- A wrong character turns red and your car stops until you fix it with Backspace, just like a real race where you cannot skip a mistake.
- Cross the finish line by typing the last character correctly. Press New race (or Tab then Enter) to go again.
Racing against your ghost
Your ghost is a replay of your best run. While you race, the tool records the exact moment each character became correct. When you finish, that list of timestamps is saved in this browser, and next time the ghost car replays it on the same text, character by character, at the pace you actually typed: including your hesitations and bursts.
There is one ghost per race length and per language. The first race you finish becomes the ghost. After that, a run only replaces it when it is faster, so the ghost is always your personal best. Because the ghost race uses the same text as your best run, the comparison is fair: the Lead counter shows how many characters you are ahead of or behind it at every moment. Delete my ghost removes the ghost for the selected length and language and gives you a fresh random text.
Racing against the clock
In Beat the clock, a stopwatch car drives at a constant speed, the Clock speed you picked. The time limit is the time that speed needs to cover the whole text: for a text of n characters at s WPM, the limit is n ÷ (5 × s) minutes. The Time left counter runs down from that limit. Reach the finish line first and you win; if time runs out, the race stops and shows how much of the track you covered. Start slow, then raise the clock speed by 10 WPM each time you win comfortably.
How your speed is measured
Speed is given in words per minute (WPM), using the usual typing convention that one “word” is five characters, spaces and punctuation included. Since every character must be correct to cross the line, your finishing WPM is the number of characters in the text divided by 5, divided by the finishing time in minutes. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were right when you typed them, and Typing mistakes counts every wrong character, even the ones you corrected. The texts and the scoring rules are the same as in the typing speed test, so your results are comparable.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my ghost stored?
Only in this browser’s local storage, together with its text. Nothing is uploaded. A private window, another browser or clearing your site data starts you without a ghost.
Why does my car stop moving?
The car only advances on characters typed correctly from the start of the text. After a typo, delete back to the mistake and type the right character, and the car moves again.
Can I paste the text?
No. Pasting or dropping text stops the race, because it would not measure your typing.
Does the page move a lot?
Only the two cars move. If your device asks for reduced motion, the cars jump in small steps a few times per second instead of gliding.
Are accents and apostrophes checked?
Yes, but typographic variants are treated alike: a curly apostrophe equals a straight one, and an accented letter typed with a dead key equals the precomposed letter.
