How to make and study flashcards
- Pick a Deck or create one: type a Deck name and press New deck. Rename changes the name of the selected deck, and Delete deck removes it after a confirmation.
- Under Add a card, type the Term (front) and the Definition (back), then press Add card. Pressing Enter in the term field jumps to the definition, and Ctrl+Enter in the definition adds the card.
- To add many cards at once, open Import and export: drop a CSV file, or paste rows and press Import pasted rows.
- In Study, choose the Cards to study, tick Shuffle or Show the definition first if you like, and press Start studying.
- Try to recall the answer, then click the card or press Flip card. Be honest: press I knew it or Not yet.
- At the end, the tool shows how many cards you knew. Study missed cards again runs a quick extra round with the ones you missed.
- To study on paper, go to Print, choose the Paper size and press Download printable PDF.
Every change is saved automatically. The Cards in this deck table lets you fix a typo in any term or definition, and the × button removes a card.
How the spaced repetition works
This tool uses a simple Leitner system with five boxes. A new card starts in box 1. Each time you start a session in Due cards (spaced repetition) mode, the tool picks the cards that are due:
| Box | Card comes back after |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 session |
| 2 | 2 sessions |
| 3 | 4 sessions |
| 4 | 8 sessions |
| 5 | 16 sessions |
I knew it moves a card up one box, so you see it less and less often. Not yet sends it back to box 1, so it returns in the very next session. Cards you know well fade into the background while difficult ones keep coming back, which is exactly where your study time should go. The Leitner boxes counters show how your deck is spread across the five boxes.
Spacing is counted in study sessions, not in days. If no card would be due in the next session, the tool skips ahead to the first session that has due cards, so pressing Start studying always gives you something to review. For the best results, do one session a day.
All cards (practice, progress unchanged) shows the whole deck, for example the night before an exam, without touching the boxes. Reset progress puts every card of the deck back in box 1.
Importing and exporting CSV
Put the term in the first column and the definition in the second. Commas, semicolons and tabs are detected automatically, so you can paste straight from a spreadsheet. Fields in double quotes can contain commas or line breaks, as in standard CSV. A first row such as “term, definition”, “question; answer” or the same words in another site language (“Begriff; Definition”, “pregunta; respuesta”) is recognized as a header and ignored, and rows with a missing term or definition are skipped and counted. Imported cards are added to the selected deck.
Export CSV saves the deck as a UTF-8 file with a term, definition header. It opens in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets, and it is also the best way to back up your decks or move them to another computer.
Printing flashcards
The PDF puts eight cards on each page, two columns by four rows, with dashed cut lines and a small number in the corner of each card. Long texts are wrapped and shrunk to fit. With Add definition pages (for double-sided printing) ticked, each page of terms is followed by a page of definitions, mirrored left to right, so the answers land behind the right terms when you print double-sided and flip on the long edge. Print a single test page first to check your printer’s alignment.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my flashcards stored?
In your browser’s local storage, on this device only. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing your browsing data or using a private window removes them, so export important decks as CSV.
Can I use my cards on another device?
Yes: press Export CSV, move the file, then import it on the other device with the drop zone.
How many cards can a deck hold?
Up to 5,000 cards per deck and 100 decks. Browser storage is usually limited to about 5 MB, which is plenty for text cards.
Can I import cards from Quizlet or Anki?
If the other app can export plain text with the term and the definition separated by a tab, comma or semicolon, paste that text into the import box.
Does practice mode change my progress?
No. Only answers given in Due cards (spaced repetition) mode move cards between boxes. The extra round of missed cards doesn’t change them either.
