Grade Calculator
Free weighted grade calculator. Enter assignments and exams as percentages, points or letters with their weights and get your class average instantly.
Enter each grade as a percentage (85), as points (17/20) or as a letter (B+). Weights can be percentages of the course or coefficients.

Letter grades are converted to the middle of their percentage range. Scales are examples: cut-offs and grade points vary by school and institution.
How to calculate your grade
- Choose the Calculation: Weighted average (grade × weight) for most course outlines, or Total points (sum earned ÷ sum possible) when your teacher simply adds up points.
- Fill one row per assignment, quiz or exam. The Grade column accepts a percentage (
85), points (17/20) or a letter (B+). The Weight column takes the share of the course (20for 20%) or a coefficient (2). - Use Add a row for more items and the × button to remove one. Clear empties the table.
- Read your Average, the matching Letter (GPA points), the Total weight and the number of Items counted. The calculation is shown step by step below the results.
Everything updates as you type, and rows with a problem are highlighted in red with a short explanation.
How a weighted grade works
A weighted average gives more influence to the items that count more. Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added, and the sum is divided by the total weight:
Average = Σ (grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight
Example: homework 18/20 (90%) worth 20%, a midterm at 85% worth 30% and a project at 88.5% worth 50%. The products are 1,800 + 2,550 + 4,425 = 8,775, and 8,775 ÷ 100 = 87.75%.
If you leave every weight empty, the tool computes a simple average in which each item counts once. As soon as one weight is filled in, every graded row needs a weight, so that nothing is counted by accident.
When the weights don’t add up to 100
Halfway through a term, your graded work might only cover 40% of the course. The tool then divides by 40, not by 100, which gives your current average on the work graded so far. A note tells you when the weights add up to something other than 100. To see what you need on the remaining work, use the final grade calculator.
Total points instead of weights
Some teachers skip weights and simply add up points: 8/10 + 45/50 gives 53/60, or 88.33%. Choose Total points for that method. Every grade must then be written as points (earned/possible). The result differs from a weighted average, because a 50-point test automatically weighs five times as much as a 10-point quiz.
Letter grades and scales
When you type a letter, the tool turns it into the middle of its percentage range on the chosen Letter grade scale (example): on the US scale with +/−, a B+ covers 87% to just under 90%, so it counts as 88.5%. Your average is then converted back to a letter with the same scale. Three example scales are available: US with +/−, US without +/−, and a Canadian 4.33 scale. They are only examples: cut-offs and grade points vary between schools, school boards and universities, so check your syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?
If your syllabus says “homework 20%, tests 50%, final 30%”, enter one row per category with its average and its weight. You can also enter every assignment separately and split the category weight between them.
Can I mix percentages, points and letters?
Yes. Each row can use a different format. Points and letters are converted to percentages before averaging, and the steps show the percentage used for each row.
Why is my average different from the one in my school portal?
Portals may round each item, drop the lowest quiz, use a different letter scale or count missing work as zero. This tool uses exactly what you enter, without rounding until the final display.
Can a grade be above 100%?
Yes. Extra credit such as 105 or 21/20 is accepted and counted as is.
Are my grades sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device.
