EPUB Reader and Text Extractor
Open an EPUB ebook in your browser, browse its chapters with the table of contents, and extract the whole text as a .txt file. No upload, no app to install.
The book's own fonts, colours and layout are not applied: chapters are shown in a clean, safe reading view.
How to read an EPUB file online
- Drop an EPUB file in the drop zone, or click it to choose one. The title, the author and the file size appear above the reader.
- The first chapter opens on the right. Use the Contents list to jump to a chapter or a section, and the ← and → buttons to go to the previous or next section of the book.
- Links between chapters (notes, cross-references) work inside the reader. Links to websites open in a new tab.
- To get the text of the whole book, click Extract text (.txt). A plain-text file with the title, the author and every section in reading order is downloaded.
What is inside an EPUB file
An EPUB is a ZIP archive with a precise structure. The file META-INF/container.xml names the package document (the OPF file). The package lists the book’s metadata (title, author, language), a manifest of every file (chapters in XHTML, images, style sheets, fonts) and the spine: the order in which the chapters are read. The table of contents is a separate navigation document in EPUB 3, or an NCX file in older EPUB 2 books.
This tool follows the same path as an e-reader: it opens the archive, reads the container, then the package, then the table of contents, and shows the chapters in spine order. When a book has no table of contents, the sections are simply numbered.
A safe reading view
A book file can contain anything, including scripts and links to remote resources. So each chapter is cleaned before it is displayed: scripts, forms, embedded frames, styles and event handlers are removed, and only the text structure is kept (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, emphasis, links). Images stored in the book are displayed from memory; nothing is ever loaded from the internet.
The trade-off is that the book’s own fonts, colours and page layout are not applied. Text is shown in the site’s clean reading style, which suits novels, essays and most non-fiction. Fixed-layout books (comics, children’s picture books) and books that rely on complex layouts look simpler than in a dedicated e-reader.
Extracting the text
Extract text (.txt) goes through every section of the spine, including those marked as non-linear such as notes, and turns each chapter into plain text: paragraphs are separated by blank lines, list items start with a dash, and line breaks are kept. The result is useful for quoting, counting words, searching, translating, or feeding the text to another tool. The file is encoded in UTF-8, so accents and other scripts are preserved.
Limits
- Books protected by DRM (Adobe, Kindle, Kobo or Apple encryption) can’t be opened: their chapters are encrypted. Obfuscated fonts, used by many DRM-free books, are not a problem.
- Audio and video embedded in a book are not played.
- Very large archives (over 4 GB, ZIP64) are not supported.
Privacy
Your book is opened and read by your browser, on your device. It is never uploaded, and the extracted text is created locally.
Frequently asked questions
Can I read Kindle books with this tool?
No. Kindle files (AZW, KFX) use another format and are usually protected by DRM. This tool reads DRM-free EPUB files, such as those from public-domain libraries or many independent publishers.
Why does the book look different than in my e-reader?
For security, the book’s own styles and fonts are not applied. The text, headings, images, tables and links are kept, in a neutral reading layout.
How do I convert an EPUB to TXT?
Open the book, then click Extract text (.txt). The whole book is saved as a single text file, in reading order.
Does the tool remember where I stopped reading?
No. Nothing is stored: reopen the file and use Contents to go back to your chapter.
Why do some images not show?
Only images stored inside the EPUB can be shown. Images the book links from the internet are not loaded, and images in unusual formats may be skipped.
