How it was calculated
How to use the salary to hourly converter
- Type your Pay amount, for example 60000 for a yearly salary or 28.50 for an hourly wage.
- In Paid, say what the amount represents: Annual, Monthly, Semi-monthly, Bi-weekly, Weekly, Daily or Hourly.
- Adjust your schedule: Hours per week (40 by default, 37.5 is also common), Days per week and Paid weeks per year.
- Read every equivalent at once: Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Bi-weekly, Semi-monthly, Monthly and Annual, plus the number of paid hours and days per year.
Click Copy to copy all the amounts as text, for a job comparison or a budget. Open How it was calculated to see the steps with your numbers. All figures are gross pay, before income tax and payroll deductions.
The formulas
Everything goes through the annual amount:
- Annual = hourly wage × hours per week × paid weeks per year
- Hourly = annual / (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
- Weekly = annual / paid weeks per year; Bi-weekly = 2 × weekly
- Daily = weekly / days per week
- Monthly = annual / 12; Semi-monthly = annual / 24
Example: 60,000 a year at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year is 2,080 paid hours, so 60,000 / 2,080 ≈ 28.85 an hour. The same salary is 5,000 a month, 2,500 semi-monthly, 2,307.69 bi-weekly, 1,153.85 a week and 230.77 a day. In the other direction, 25 an hour at 37.5 hours a week is 25 × 37.5 × 52 = 48,750 a year.
Paid weeks per year
Keep 52 paid weeks if you are salaried or if your vacation and statutory holidays are paid: your pay does not change during those weeks. Lower it when some weeks are unpaid, for example a contractor who bills 48 weeks a year, or seasonal work. Then the tool spreads the annual amount over fewer weeks, which raises the weekly, daily and hourly figures you need to earn the same yearly income.
Monthly and semi-monthly amounts are calendar splits (12 and 24 pay days per year), so they do not depend on the number of weeks. A year actually has 52 weeks and 1 or 2 days, which is why some years have 27 bi-weekly pay days instead of 26; this tool uses the usual 26.
Comparing job offers
An hourly job and a salaried job are only comparable when you use the same schedule. A 55,000 salary with 37.5-hour weeks (about 28.21 an hour) pays more per hour than 57,000 with 40-hour weeks (about 27.40). Paid overtime, benefits, pension contributions and paid time off also matter and are not included.
Frequently asked questions
Is this before or after tax?
Before tax. The amounts are gross pay. Income tax, CPP or QPP, EI and other deductions depend on your province and situation.
How many working hours are there in a year?
With 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, 2,080 hours. With 37.5 hours, 1,950 hours. The tool shows the total for your schedule.
Why is bi-weekly pay not half of monthly pay?
Because there are 26 bi-weekly pay days but only 24 semi-monthly ones in a year. Two months each year contain three bi-weekly pay days.
Can I use it for part-time work?
Yes. Enter your real hours and days, for example 24 hours over 3 days. The daily amount then reflects 8-hour days.
Does it handle other currencies?
Pick your currency in Currency: the list covers the currencies of many countries. Only the display changes; the math is the same.
