Clothing Size Converter

Convert clothing sizes between US, UK, EU, French, Italian and letter sizes for women, men and children, plus bra sizes, with approximate body measurements.

Measure the body, not a garment: a relaxed tape around the fullest part of the bust or chest, the natural waist, or the height without shoes.

All sizes are approximate. Brands and countries cut differently, and vanity sizing shifts numbers over time: always check the brand's own size chart and compare your body measurements with it.

Size chart

Tables compiled from the usual national size designations. Body measurements follow the EN 13402 idea of labelling clothes by body dimensions in cm; children's EU sizes are the child's height in cm. They are typical values, not a standard.

How to use the clothing size converter

  1. Choose the Clothing type: Women: tops, dresses, coats, Women: pants and jeans, Men: shirts, jackets, suits, Men: pants and jeans, Children and babies or Bras.
  2. Pick the Size system you know (for example US, UK or International (letter)) and your Size. The equivalent sizes in every other system appear at once, with the approximate body measurements that go with them.
  3. Not sure of your size? Type a body measurement in the field below, for example Or find the size from your bust measurement. Choose centimetres or inches in Measurement unit. The tool picks the closest row of the chart.
  4. For Bras, select the system, Band and Cup, or fill in Underbust (just under the breasts) and Bust (fullest part) under Or calculate from your measurements.
  5. The matching line of the size chart is highlighted. Copy copies the equivalences as one line of text.

How the tables are built

Clothing sizes are not an exact science: there is no worldwide standard, and each country kept its own numbering. The charts in this tool follow the correspondences that most retailers publish:

  • Women’s numeric sizes keep a fixed offset: UK = US + 4, EU (Germany, Netherlands, Nordic countries) = US + 30, France, Belgium and Spain = US + 32, Italy = US + 36, Australia = UK. A US 8 is therefore a UK 12, an EU 38, a French 40 and an Italian 44.
  • Men’s jackets and suits use the chest: US and UK sizes are the chest in inches (38, 40…), European sizes are about half the chest girth in centimetres (48, 50…). Shirt collars are the neck size in inches or centimetres.
  • Jeans are labelled by waist (W) and inseam (L) in inches: W32 L34 means a 32-inch waist and a 34-inch leg.
  • Children’s sizes in Europe are simply the child’s height in centimetres (86, 92, 98…), as proposed by the European standard EN 13402. The US uses months and toddler sizes (2T, 3T), while the UK and France label by age.
  • Letter sizes (XS to XXL) are the loosest of all. The tool maps them to the numeric sizes and body measurements most brands use, but one brand’s M is another’s L.

The body measurements shown with each size (bust, waist, hips, chest, height) are typical values in the spirit of EN 13402, which recommends labelling clothes with the body dimensions they fit. They are approximations, not a standard.

Bra sizes

A bra size has two parts: the band and the cup. In Europe the band is the underbust in centimetres, rounded to the nearest 5 (75, 80…); France, Belgium and Spain add 15 (90, 95…). The UK and US use inches (32, 34…), and Australia uses dress-size bands (10, 12…).

The cup comes from the difference between the bust and the underbust. In the EU each cup letter covers 2 cm: AA 10–12 cm, A 12–14 cm, B 14–16 cm and so on. The letter sequences differ above D: the UK goes D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H; the US commonly goes D, DD, DDD, G, H, I; the EU goes D, E, F, G, H. The tool lines them up, so a UK 34DD is an EU 75E and a French 90E.

Example: an underbust of 74 cm and a bust of 90 cm gives a 75 band and a 16 cm difference, cup C: EU 75C, French 90C, UK and US 34C.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my usual size not fit in another brand?

Brands design for their own customers and many practise vanity sizing, labelling larger garments with smaller numbers. Always compare your body measurements with the brand’s chart.

Is an EU 38 the same as a French 38?

No. French sizes are usually two above German and Dutch sizes: an EU (German) 38 is a French 40. Italian sizes are four above German ones.

Which measurement should I take?

For tops, the bust or chest at its fullest; for pants, the natural waist; for children, the height without shoes. Keep the tape snug but not tight.

Are the bra conversions exact?

No. EU cups step by 2 cm while UK and US cups step by about one inch, so large cups drift apart, and brands fit differently. Use the result as a starting point and try on.

What does W30 L32 mean?

A 30-inch waist and a 32-inch inseam, about 76 cm and 81 cm.
