How to use the height converter
- To convert from metric, type your height in Height in centimetres, for example 175. The Feet and Inches boxes fill in automatically: 5 ft 8.9 in.
- To convert from imperial, type in Feet and Inches instead, for example 5 and 9. The centimetre box updates to 175.26.
- You can also type the whole height in the Feet box, in the usual notations: 5‘9”, 5′9″ or 5 ft 9 in.
- Choose how the inches are rounded in Round inches to: Nearest inch, Nearest ½ inch, Nearest ¼ inch or Nearest 0.1 inch.
- Read the result line, for example “175 cm = 5 ft 8.9 in (5′9″)”, with the height in total inches and in metres below it, and the calculation step by step. Copy copies the result line and Clear empties every box.
The two tables at the bottom are a ready-made height chart: every inch from 4′6″ to 7′0″ in centimetres, and every 5 cm from 140 to 210 cm in feet and inches.
How the conversion works
Two exact definitions are all you need: 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 foot = 12 inches (so 1 foot = 30.48 cm).
From feet and inches to centimetres: convert everything to inches, then multiply by 2.54. 5 ft 9 in = 5 × 12 + 9 = 69 in, and 69 × 2.54 = 175.26 cm. This direction is always exact.
From centimetres to feet and inches: divide by 2.54 to get inches, then split off whole feet. 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976 in. 68.8976 ÷ 12 = 5 ft, with 8.8976 in left over, so 175 cm ≈ 5 ft 8.9 in, or 5′9″ rounded to the nearest inch.
The tool rounds the total number of inches before splitting it, so the result never shows an impossible “5 ft 12 in”: 182.8 cm rounded to the nearest inch correctly becomes 6 ft 0 in.
Common heights
| Centimetres | Feet and inches |
|---|---|
| 150 cm | 4′11″ (4 ft 11.1 in) |
| 160 cm | 5′3″ (5 ft 3 in) |
| 170 cm | 5′7″ (5 ft 6.9 in) |
| 175 cm | 5′9″ (5 ft 8.9 in) |
| 180 cm | 5′11″ (5 ft 10.9 in) |
| 190 cm | 6′3″ (6 ft 2.8 in) |
And in the other direction: 5′0″ = 152.4 cm, 5′6″ = 167.64 cm, 6′0″ = 182.88 cm.
Notation
In English-speaking countries height is written with a prime for feet and a double prime for inches: 5′9″ reads “five foot nine”. The straight quotes on a keyboard (5‘9”) are an accepted substitute, and this tool understands both. Medical forms in the United States and Canada often ask for height in feet and inches, while passports and most of the world use centimetres or metres.
Frequently asked questions
How tall is 5 foot 7 in cm?
5 ft 7 in = 67 in, and 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm, about 170 cm.
How do I write 1.80 m in feet?
1.80 m is 180 cm, which is 70.87 inches: 5 ft 10.9 in, usually rounded to 5′11″. Type 180 in the centimetre box to see it.
Can I enter decimal feet, like 5.5 ft?
Yes. Type 5.5 in Feet and leave Inches empty. The tool reads it as 5.5 × 12 = 66 in and shows 167.64 cm, normalised to 5 ft 6 in.
What if I type more than 12 inches?
The tool adds them up correctly: 4 ft 18 in is 66 in, displayed as 5 ft 6 in (167.64 cm).
Why does my cm value change slightly when I edit the inches?
Inches are rounded according to Round inches to. When you then type in the feet or inches boxes, the centimetres are recalculated exactly from those rounded inches. Choose Nearest 0.1 inch to keep the two sides as close as possible.
