How to use the dice roller
- Type what you want to roll in Dice to roll, for example
2d6,d20+5or3d8+1d6+2. The number before the “d” is how many dice, the number after it is how many sides. - Or build the roll with the buttons next to Add a die:. Each click on d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 adds one die of that type, so three clicks on d6 give
3d6. For an unusual die, enter the number of sides in Custom die (sides) and press Add custom die. Reset empties the box. - Press Roll (or Enter). The dice tumble in the tray, then the Total, the number of Dice rolled, and the Lowest possible and Highest possible results appear, with a line-by-line Breakdown of every group of dice.
- For tabletop shortcuts, use Advantage (2d20, keep highest), Disadvantage (2d20, keep lowest) or Ability score (4d6, drop lowest): each one fills in the notation and rolls straight away.
- Every roll is added to the Roll history. Click a notation in the history to put it back in the box. Copy copies the latest roll as one line of text, ready to paste in a chat.
Untick Animate the dice to get results instantly. If your device is set to reduce motion, the animation is skipped automatically.
Dice notation supported
The notation follows the conventions used by most virtual tabletops and Discord dice bots:
| Notation | Meaning |
|---|---|
d20, 1d20 |
one twenty-sided die |
2d6+3 |
two six-sided dice plus 3 |
1d8-1d4 |
a d8 minus a d4 |
d% or d100 |
a percentile die, 1 to 100 |
4d6kh3 or 4d6k3 |
roll four d6, keep the three highest |
2d20kl1 |
roll two d20, keep the lowest |
4d6dl1 or 4d6d1 |
drop the lowest die |
5d10dh2 |
drop the two highest dice |
d20 adv / d20 dis |
advantage / disadvantage (2d20, keep highest / lowest) |
3d6! |
exploding dice: each 6 adds another die |
You can combine up to 20 groups and roll up to 1,000 dice per group (5,000 in total), with dice from 2 to 1,000,000 sides. Dropped dice stay visible but faded and struck through, so you can check the result. Extra dice from an explosion are marked with an asterisk; a single group can explode at most 100 times, so the highest possible total is shown as ∞.
In the copied text, dropped dice are written between double tildes (~~1~~), which Discord and many chat apps display as strikethrough.
Are the rolls fair?
Yes. Each die uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API) with rejection sampling, which removes the small “modulo bias” that simple random code can have. Every face of every die has exactly the same chance, whatever the number of sides. The result is decided the moment you press Roll; the tumbling animation only shows random faces for fun and does not change anything. Nothing is sent to a server: the rolls happen on your device.
Useful examples
- Board games:
2d6for Monopoly or Catan,5d6for Yahtzee. - Dungeons & Dragons 5e:
d20+5for an attack,2d6+3for greatsword damage,8d6for a fireball, and six clicks on Ability score (4d6, drop lowest) to create a character. - Other RPGs:
d%for percentile systems,3d6for classic stat rolls,6d10for dice pools where you count successes in the breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average of a roll?
A die with n sides averages (n + 1) / 2: 3.5 for a d6, 10.5 for a d20. Add the averages of all dice and the modifiers: 2d6+3 averages 10. Keeping or dropping dice raises or lowers the average; 4d6kh3 averages about 12.24.
How do advantage and disadvantage work?
With advantage you roll two d20 and keep the higher one; with disadvantage you keep the lower one. You can type d20 adv, 2d20kh1, or press the button.
Can I roll a die with an unusual number of sides?
Yes. Type 1d7 or 3d30 directly, or use Custom die (sides). Any number of sides from 2 to 1,000,000 works; unusual dice are drawn as circles.
Why does the tray show only some of my dice?
The tray draws up to 60 dice to stay readable. All the dice still count, and every value appears in the Breakdown.
Is the roll history saved?
The history lasts while the page stays open, up to the last 50 rolls. Reloading the page or pressing Clear history empties it.
