Wheel Spinner

Spin a custom wheel to pick a name, a prize or a decision. Fair crypto randomness, remove the winner after each spin, and your list is saved locally.

Your list is saved in this browser only.

How to use the wheel spinner

  1. Type your choices in Entries (one per line): names, prizes, restaurants, chores, questions… Empty lines are ignored. The wheel redraws as you type, and the counter shows how many entries it holds.
  2. Press Shuffle if you want the order on the wheel mixed up. It changes how the wheel looks, not the odds.
  3. Press Spin (or click the wheel). After a few seconds the wheel stops under the pointer at the top, and the result is shown in large type below it.
  4. Tick Remove winner after spin to take each result off the list automatically, so nobody is picked twice. This is handy for turn order, presentations or a prize draw.
  5. Every result is added to Previous results. Use Clear history to start fresh.

Up to 200 entries fit on the wheel. With many entries the labels get small, so for long lists a simple name draw may be easier to read.

How the wheel picks a winner

Many online wheels spin with a random speed and simply see where physics-like friction stops them, which can hide subtle biases. This wheel works the other way round. When you press Spin, the winner is chosen first, using the cryptographic random number generator built into your browser (the Web Crypto API) with unbiased rejection sampling. Every entry has exactly the same probability: 1 in 6 with six entries, 1 in 30 with thirty.

The animation is then calculated to land on that entry: the wheel makes five to seven full turns, slows down smoothly and stops at a random spot inside the winning segment, so it never looks mechanical. Segment size, colors, and the time since your last spin have no influence on the result.

If your device is set to reduce motion (the “Reduce motion” accessibility setting on iOS, macOS, Android or Windows), the wheel does not spin: it moves straight to the result, with the same fair odds. The result text is also announced to screen readers.

Ideas for using a spinning wheel

  • Classrooms: pick the next student to answer, choose a reading group, or decide the order of presentations with Remove winner after spin ticked.
  • Meetings: choose who runs the stand-up, takes notes or presents first.
  • Giveaways: paste the participants’ names and spin once per prize. Remember that a screen recording is the only record of a draw.
  • Decisions: where to eat, which movie to watch, which task to tackle first.
  • Games: truth or dare, charades topics, or random challenges.

Your list stays in your browser

The list is saved in your browser’s local storage so it is still there next time you open this page on the same device and browser. It is never sent to a server. To remove it, delete the entries from the box, or clear this site’s data in your browser settings. In a private window the list is forgotten when you close it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wheel really fair?

Yes. Each spin draws one entry uniformly at random with cryptographic randomness, and the animation only shows that result. No entry is favoured, whatever its position, length or color.

Can I give an entry a better chance?

Add it several times. An entry that appears twice on a list of ten has two chances in ten: duplicate lines are kept on the wheel on purpose, each with its own segment.

Why did the same entry win twice in a row?

With a fair draw, every spin is independent, so repeats happen naturally: with five entries, the same result comes up twice in a row about one time in five. Tick Remove winner after spin if each entry should win only once.

Does it work offline and on a phone?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, spinning needs no connection, and the wheel resizes to fit small screens.

How do I undo a removed winner?

Type the entry back into the list. The history under Previous results keeps every result of the session so you can see what was removed.
