Add Border or Padding to Image
Add a border, padding, rounded corners and a drop shadow to one or many images at once, in your browser, with no upload and no watermark.
How to add a border to an image
- Drop one or more images on the drop zone, or click it to choose them. Each file gets its own row in the list.
- Under Sizes in, choose pixels for exact widths, or % of the shorter side so that pictures of different sizes get a frame of the same proportion.
- Set the Border width and Border color: this is the outer frame.
- Set the Padding and Padding color: this is the mat between the border and the picture, like the passe-partout of a framed print. Use 0 for no padding.
- Round the frame with Corner radius, and tick Drop shadow to lift the picture off the page; Shadow size controls how soft and wide it is.
- Under Outside the frame, keep Transparent for rounded corners and shadows that blend with any background, or untick it and pick an Outside color.
- Choose the Output format and Quality, check the Preview of the first image, then click Add border. Download each image with its own button, or use Download all.
How the layers fit together
From the inside out, the result is made of the picture, the padding, the border and, if you enabled it, a margin that holds the shadow. A 1200 × 800 photo with 20 px of border and 40 px of padding becomes 1320 × 920 px: 60 px are added on each side. The picture itself is never scaled or cropped, so it keeps its full resolution.
The Corner radius applies to the outer edge of the frame. The inner edges are rounded with the same curve, minus the border and padding widths, so the lines stay parallel like a real rounded frame. With no border and no padding, the radius rounds the photo itself.
The Drop shadow needs space around the frame, so the tool adds a margin of about one and a half times the shadow blur. That margin is transparent, or filled with the Outside color when Transparent is unticked.
Transparency and file formats
Rounded corners and shadows need transparent pixels to look right on every background. PNG and WebP keep them. JPG has no transparency: when you save as JPG, everything outside the frame is filled with the Outside color instead, so choose the color of the page where the image will be shown. Same as original keeps the input format when the browser can write it, and saves other formats (GIF, BMP…) as PNG.
Ideas
- A white 5 % padding with a thin grey border gives any photo a clean “gallery” look.
- Rounded corners with a soft shadow make screenshots look polished in slides and documentation.
- Use % units to frame a whole batch of photos of different sizes consistently.
All the processing happens in your browser: your images are never uploaded, and the new files carry no EXIF metadata.
Frequently asked questions
How do I put a white border around a photo?
Drop the photo, set Border width (for example 30 pixels) and set Border color to white, then click Add border. For a wider, softer frame, use the Padding with a white Padding color instead of, or in addition to, the border.
What is the difference between border and padding?
Both add space around the picture. The border is the outer frame line; the padding is the space between that line and the picture. Giving them different colors creates a mat-and-frame effect.
Why are the corners of my JPG white instead of transparent?
JPG cannot store transparency. The area outside rounded corners or around the shadow is filled with the Outside color. Choose PNG or WebP to keep it transparent.
Can I frame many images at once?
Yes. Drop as many images as you like: the same settings are applied to all of them when you click Add border, and Download all saves every result.
Does adding a border reduce the image quality?
The picture is copied pixel for pixel, never resized. Only JPG or WebP compression can lose a little detail; choose PNG or a high Quality for a lossless result.
