Scales are examples: letter cut-offs vary by school and institution. Check your course outline for the exact weights and rules (minimum final score, rounding…).

How to find the score you need on the final

  1. Under Current grade, choose I know my current grade and type it as a percentage (82), points (41/50) or a letter. Or choose Calculate it from my grades and enter your graded work in the table, with each item’s weight.
  2. Enter the Final exam weight (%), as written in your course outline (for example 30).
  3. Enter your Target course grade (%, points or letter), for example 85, 14/20 or B+. A letter such as B+ means the lowest percentage of that letter on the chosen scale.
  4. Read the Score needed on the final, with a sentence telling you whether it is reachable. The calculation appears step by step.
  5. Optionally, type a score in What if I score… on the final? to see the course grade you would end up with.

The table below the result shows the Score needed for each letter grade of the selected scale, so you can see at a glance what an A, a B or a pass would take.

The formula

Your course grade after the final is a weighted mix of what you already have and the final exam:

Course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the final’s weight as a fraction (30% → 0.3).

Solving for the final gives:

Final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Example: a current grade of 82%, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%. The work you already did contributes 82 × 0.7 = 57.4 points. You need 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 more points from the final, and 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92%.

Reading the result

  • Above 100%: the target cannot be reached with the final alone, unless there are bonus points or a curve.
  • 0% or less: you have already secured the target, even with a zero on the final. Check that your course has no minimum score on the final exam, which some schools require to pass.
  • Anything in between is the minimum you need. Aim a little higher to allow for rounding.

Calculating the current grade from your work

If your portal doesn’t show a running average, choose Calculate it from my grades. Enter each graded item with its weight as a percentage of the course. The tool computes the weighted average of that work and tells you what share of the course is not graded yet. For example, a midterm worth 30% and assignments worth 40% leave 30% ungraded, which is often the final’s weight. If other work is still to come (a project, labs), the final’s weight is smaller than the ungraded share, and the formula assumes you keep your current average on that other work.

Letter grade scales

The letter table uses example scales: US with +/−, US without +/−, and a Canadian 4.33 scale. Letter cut-offs differ between schools and instructors, so read the scale in your syllabus before relying on the table.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need on my final to pass?

Enter the passing grade of your course as the target (often 50% or 60%, depending on the school). The Score needed for each letter grade table also shows the D or pass line of the chosen scale.

Does the tool round my grades?

No. Results are shown with up to two decimals, but the calculation keeps full precision. Your school may round the final course grade.

Can I use it when the final counts for 100% of the course?

Yes, although the result is then simply your target: your current grade no longer counts.

My course has several exams left. What should I enter?

The tool handles one remaining assessment. Treat everything left as one block (for example “40% remaining”) to find the average you need across it.

Is my data saved or sent?

No. Everything runs in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
