These scales are common examples, not official standards: cut-offs and grade points vary by school, board and institution.
How to convert a percentage to a letter grade
- Type your Score (% or points like 43/50). Points are turned into a percentage first: 43/50 = 86%.
- Pick a Scale: US, A–F with +/− (example), US, A–F without +/− (example) or Canada, 4.33 scale (example).
- Read the Letter grade, its GPA points, the Percentage used and the letter’s Range.
The result updates as you type. A score is compared with each letter’s minimum, and the highest letter whose minimum you reach is the one you get: with the US +/− scale, 89.99% is still a B+ and 90% is an A−.
Adapt the scale to your school
Grading scales are not universal. One school gives an A from 93%, another from 90%, and a Canadian university might start its A+ at 90% and give it 4.33 points. Under Edit the scale, every letter has a From (%) value (its minimum percentage) and a number of Points. Change any value, rename letters, use Add a letter for a new one or × to remove one. The scale menu then shows Custom (edited). Restore the example scale brings back the last example you picked.
A few rules keep a custom scale valid: each letter needs a unique name and a minimum of 0 or more. Rows that break these rules are highlighted and ignored. If no letter starts at 0%, scores below the lowest minimum get no letter, which is handy for pass/fail scales such as “Pass from 50%”.
Convert a whole list
Teachers and parents can convert many scores at once in Convert a list (one score per line). Each line can be a percentage or points, and the table shows the percentage, letter and points for each one. Blank lines are skipped and invalid lines are flagged in red.
Common US scale with +/−
| Letter | Percentage | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100 | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96 | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92 | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82 | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76 | 2.0 |
| C− | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66 | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62 | 0.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 |
Ranges in the table are shown for whole numbers; the tool itself handles decimals, so 92.5% is an A−. Some schools give an A+ 4.33 points, and some don’t use A+ or D− at all.
Frequently asked questions
What letter grade is 85%?
On the US +/− example scale, 85% is a B (3.0). Without +/−, it is also a B. On the Canadian 4.33 example scale, it is an A (4.0), which shows how much scales differ.
Does the tool round my score?
No. It compares the exact value you type. Many teachers round to the nearest whole number before assigning a letter, so 89.5% may become a B+ or an A− depending on that policy.
Where do these scales come from?
They are common examples, not an official standard. US schools often use 10-point bands, and several Canadian universities use a 4.33 scale. Check your syllabus or student handbook for the scale that applies to you.
Can I convert letters back to percentages?
A letter covers a range, so it has no single percentage. The Range shown with each result tells you the span of percentages behind a letter.
Is anything sent or saved?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, and custom scales are not stored.
