Volume Converter
Convert volume between mL, litres, m³, teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, pints, quarts and gallons, with US and UK units kept apart.

Formula:
≈ means the result was rounded to the chosen number of significant figures.

How to use the volume converter
- Type a quantity in Value (a decimal point or a decimal comma both work).
- Choose the starting unit in From and the target unit in To. US and imperial (UK) units are listed separately, for example “US pint” and “imperial pint”.
- The result updates as you type, with the full line underneath (“1 L ≈ 0.26417205 US gal”). Copy copies that line.
- The Swap units button (⇄) reverses the conversion.
- Adjust Significant figures for a rounder or a more precise figure; “≈” marks a rounded value.
The tables below give your quantity in every unit, a quick conversion table for the chosen pair, familiar reference volumes (a can, a wine bottle, a UK pint of beer) and the definition of every unit in litres.
US and imperial units are not the same
The same names hide different sizes on each side of the Atlantic, which is the most common source of conversion mistakes:
| Unit | United States | United Kingdom (imperial) |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid ounce | 29.5735295625 mL | 28.4130625 mL |
| Pint | 16 US fl oz = 473.176473 mL | 20 imperial fl oz = 568.26125 mL |
| Quart | 2 pints = 946.352946 mL | 2 pints = 1.1365225 L |
| Gallon | 231 in³ = 3.785411784 L | 4.54609 L |
All of these values are exact legal definitions. An imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, and a UK pint of beer (568 mL) is noticeably bigger than a US pint (473 mL). The imperial fluid ounce, on the other hand, is slightly smaller than the US one.
Kitchen measures
For recipes the tool offers two families of spoons and cups:
- Metric: teaspoon 5 mL, tablespoon 15 mL, cup 250 mL, used in Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
- US customary: teaspoon 4.92892159375 mL, tablespoon 14.78676478125 mL (3 teaspoons) and cup 236.5882365 mL (16 tablespoons, 8 US fl oz).
The difference is small for a spoon of vanilla but grows with larger amounts: 4 US cups are 946 mL, while 4 metric cups are a full litre. Note that US nutrition labels use a rounded 240 mL “legal cup”, and Australian tablespoons hold 20 mL. For dry ingredients measured by weight, use the weight converter instead: a cup of flour and a cup of sugar do not weigh the same.
Metric volumes
The litre is defined as one cubic decimetre, so 1 m³ = 1,000 L and 1 mL = 1 cm³. Centilitres and decilitres are common on European labels: a 33 cL can holds 330 mL and a 75 cL wine bottle holds 0.75 L.
Frequently asked questions
How many litres are in a gallon?
A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L; an imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L. Pick “US gallon” or “imperial gallon” in From depending on where the figure comes from. Fuel prices and car tank sizes in the United States use US gallons.
How many millilitres are in a cup?
A US cup is 236.59 mL, a metric cup is 250 mL. A recipe from the United States almost always means the US cup.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
Sixteen, for US units: 1 US cup = 16 US tablespoons = 48 US teaspoons. A metric cup holds about 16.7 metric tablespoons.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume, an ounce measures mass (28.35 g). A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz.
Why are some results marked "≈"?
Conversions between US and metric units rarely give round numbers, so results are rounded to the chosen number of Significant figures. Select 12 to see every digit.
