PDF to JPG/PNG

Convert each page of a PDF to a JPG or PNG image in your browser. Choose the resolution in DPI, the JPG quality and the pages, then download.

Leave empty for every page, or type pages and ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-.

How to convert a PDF to images

  1. Drop a PDF file on the drop zone, or click it to choose one. The tool shows its name, number of pages and size.
  2. Choose the Image format: JPG for smaller files, PNG for lossless images.
  3. Choose the Resolution, from 72 DPI (small, screen) to 600 DPI (very large). 150 DPI (recommended) suits most uses.
  4. For JPG, set the JPG quality with the slider (10 to 100; 90 by default). The slider is disabled for PNG, which is always lossless.
  5. Optionally, type the Pages (optional) to convert, such as 1-3, 5. Leave the field empty to convert every page.
  6. Click Convert to images. Each page appears as soon as it is ready, with its size in pixels and in kilobytes. Click Stop to end early and keep the pages already done.
  7. Download each image with Download, or all of them with Download all (ZIP).

Choosing the resolution

A PDF page has a physical size, and the resolution (DPI, dots per inch) says how many pixels each inch of the page becomes. The formula is simple: pixels = page size in inches × DPI. An A4 page (8.27 × 11.69 in) gives:

Resolution A4 page US Letter page Typical use
72 DPI 595 × 842 px 612 × 792 px previews, thumbnails
150 DPI 1240 × 1754 px 1275 × 1650 px screens, email, web pages
300 DPI 2480 × 3508 px 2550 × 3300 px printing, OCR
600 DPI 4961 × 7016 px 5100 × 6600 px fine detail, archiving

Doubling the DPI makes four times as many pixels, so files grow quickly. Browsers also limit the size of the drawing area they can use. When a page is too large for the chosen resolution (a poster, or 600 DPI in Safari), this tool renders it at the highest resolution that fits and tells you the resolution it actually used.

JPG or PNG?

JPG is ideal for scanned documents and pages with photos: files are several times smaller, and at a quality of 80 to 90 the difference is hard to see. PNG is lossless and keeps text and line drawings perfectly crisp, which suits diagrams, slides and screenshots of text, but files are larger. Pages are rendered on a white background in both formats.

Good to know

  • Images are named after the PDF and the page number, with leading zeros so they sort correctly, such as report_page-007.jpg.
  • PDFs that only restrict printing or copying convert normally. Files that need a password to open show a message instead: open them in a PDF reader with the password and remove the protection first.
  • Converting hundreds of pages at 300 DPI or more can take a while and use a lot of memory, especially on phones. Convert fewer pages at a time if your device slows down.

Privacy

The PDF is rendered into images by your browser, on your device. Neither the document nor the images are sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What DPI should I use to convert a PDF to JPG?

150 DPI is a good default for reading on screen or sharing. Use 300 DPI to print the images or run text recognition, and 72 DPI for small previews.

How do I convert only one page?

Type its number in Pages (optional), for example 4, then click Convert to images.

Why is the text in my images slightly blurry?

The resolution is probably too low for how the image is displayed. Convert again at 300 DPI, or choose PNG, which avoids JPG compression around sharp edges.

Can I get all the images at once?

Yes. After the conversion, click Download all (ZIP) to save every image in a single ZIP archive.

Does the tool keep the text of the PDF?

No. Each page becomes a picture, so the text can no longer be selected or searched. Keep the original PDF if you need the text.
