How to unscramble letters

  1. Type your letters in Your letters, for example the tiles on your rack or a jumbled word from a puzzle. Up to 15 letters are accepted.
  2. Add a ? for each blank tile or unknown letter (up to 3 blanks). A ? can stand for any letter.
  3. Under Search, choose All words from these letters to list every word you can build, or Exact anagrams (every letter) to keep only the words that use all of your letters.
  4. Pick a Minimum length to hide short words, and choose the Dictionary: English or French.
  5. Results appear as you type (or when you press Find words). Words are grouped by length, longest first, and sorted alphabetically inside each group. Use Copy all words to copy the complete list.

How the solver works

A word can be built from your letters when each of its letters is available in your rack as many times as it appears in the word. The solver counts your letters once, then checks every dictionary word of a possible length against those counts. When a letter is missing and you typed a blank, the blank fills the gap; that letter is underlined in the results so you can see which tile is doing the work.

With Exact anagrams (every letter), only words of exactly the same length as your input are kept, so “listen” returns words such as “silent”, “enlist” and “tinsel”. With All words from these letters, every shorter word is listed too, down to the minimum length you chose.

The word lists are loaded only when you search, and everything runs in your browser: your letters are never sent anywhere.

The word lists

  • English: about 80,000 words of 2 to 15 letters from the English Speller Database (formerly SCOWL) by Kevin Atkinson, at the size-60 level used by most spell checkers, with American, British and Canadian spellings. Proper nouns, abbreviations and words with apostrophes are excluded.
  • French: about 120,000 forms of 2 to 15 letters from Lexique 3.83 (CC BY-SA 4.0), including plurals, feminine forms and conjugated verbs. Accents are ignored when matching, so the letters “e”, “t”, “e” find “été”, but the word is shown with its accents.

Offensive and vulgar words have been removed from both lists. Because these are general dictionaries, not an official game list, a few words may be accepted or refused differently by your favourite word game.

Tips for word games and puzzles

  • Start with a high minimum length to see the best-scoring long words first, then lower it.
  • Use a blank when you are one letter short: “tr?in” finds “train” and shows which letter the blank supplies.
  • For crossword-style anagram clues, use the exact mode so every letter is used once.
  • Large racks with several blanks can match thousands of words; only the first 300 per length are displayed, but Copy all words copies them all.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15, blanks included. That covers every tile rack and most anagram puzzles. Spaces, digits and punctuation are ignored, so you can paste a phrase without cleaning it up first.

What does the question mark do?

A ? is a blank: it can replace any letter, like a blank tile. You can also type * or _. At most 3 blanks are allowed, because each extra blank multiplies the number of results.

Why is a word I know missing?

The English list stops at a common dictionary size to avoid obscure or misspelled entries, and proper nouns are not included. The French list contains the forms found in Lexique 3.83, which is large but not exhaustive. Words longer than 15 letters are not included.

Does the French mode handle accents and ligatures?

Yes. You can type letters with or without accents: “é”, “è” and “e” count as the same letter, and “œ” counts as “o” plus “e”. The results keep the proper French spelling.

Is this a cheat for word games?

It is a word finder. Use it to study, to check a word after a game, or to solve puzzles; when you play against others, follow the rules you agreed on.

Are my letters stored or sent anywhere?

No. The dictionaries are downloaded with the page and the search runs locally in your browser.
