How to use the VAT calculator

  1. Choose Add VAT (net → gross) when you know the price before VAT, or Remove VAT (gross → net) when you have a price that already includes VAT.
  2. Type the VAT rate (%), or pick one in Example rates: the standard rates of the 27 EU countries and of about 50 other countries (the UK, Switzerland, Norway, the Balkans, Ukraine, Arab states with a VAT, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand…). On pages in other languages, the rate of your country is pre-selected.
  3. Choose the Currency used to display the amounts.
  4. In Items, enter the Net price (excl. VAT) (or the Gross price (incl. VAT) in remove mode) and the Quantity. The Description is optional.
  5. Click Add an item for each extra line of an invoice or a basket. If an item uses another rate (a reduced rate on books or food, for example), type it in its Rate (%) field; leave it empty to use the main rate.

The Net amount, VAT amount and Gross amount update as you type. The table shows each item and the Total, VAT by rate appears when several rates are used, and Copy copies the table as text.

VAT formulas

For a net price N and a rate t:

  • VAT = N × t
  • gross price = N × (1 + t)

To remove VAT from a gross price G:

  • net price = G / (1 + t)
  • VAT = G − net price

Example at 20%: a net price of €100 gives €20 of VAT and a gross price of €120. The other way round, €120 including VAT is €100 net, not €120 − 20% = €96. This is the most common VAT mistake: the rate applies to the net price, so removing VAT means dividing by 1.20, not subtracting 20%. At 20%, the VAT is one sixth of the gross price; at 19% it is 19/119 of it.

Each line is rounded to the cent, half up. The totals are the sum of the rounded lines, as on most invoices. Some accounting systems round the VAT once per rate on the invoice total instead, which can change the VAT by a cent or two.

Example rates

The presets are the standard rates in force in September 2026, from the European Commission’s Taxes in Europe database and national tax authorities: from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary, 20% in France and the UK, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain, 25.5% in Finland and 21% in Romania since August 2025. They are examples only: every country also has reduced rates (food, books, medicines, transport, restaurants…) and exemptions, and rates change. Check the rate that applies to your product with the tax authority.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% VAT on a price?

Multiply the net price by 0.20 to get the VAT, or by 1.20 to get the price including VAT. €50 net gives €10 of VAT and €60 gross.

How do I remove VAT from a price that includes it?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate: €60 / 1.20 = €50. Use Remove VAT (gross → net) to do it for several items at once.

Can I mix several VAT rates on one invoice?

Yes. Add one item per line and type the special rate in the item’s Rate (%) field. The VAT by rate table then gives the net, VAT and gross amounts for each rate, as an invoice must show.

Is US sales tax the same as VAT?

No. VAT is charged at every stage of production and businesses deduct the VAT they paid; US sales tax is charged once, at the final sale, and depends on the state and city.

Does this tool give tax advice?

No. It performs the arithmetic on the rate you choose. Which rate applies, and whether VAT is due at all, depends on the product, the customer and the country; ask the tax authority or an accountant.
