How to use the Open Graph generator

  1. Enter the Title and Description you want people to see when your link is shared. They can differ from your SEO title: write them for a social feed.
  2. Add the Page URL (the canonical address) and the Image URL. Both must be absolute, starting with https://.
  3. Describe the image in Image description (alt text) so people using screen readers know what it shows.
  4. Choose or drop the same picture under Preview image. It stays on your device: the tool uses it only to draw the previews and to fill in Image width (px) and Image height (px).
  5. Set the Site name, Content type and Locale, then choose the X (Twitter) card style and, if you have them, the X accounts of the site and the author.
  6. Check the previews and the Checks list, then Copy or Download the tags and paste them inside the <head> of the page.

What Open Graph tags do

When a link is pasted into Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, iMessage and many other apps, a crawler fetches the page and reads its Open Graph (og:) meta tags to build a card: an image, a title, a short description and the domain. Without these tags, the app guesses, often picking a logo, a cookie banner or the first sentence of the menu.

The four basic properties are og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. This tool also adds og:description, og:site_name, og:locale and the image details (og:image:width, og:image:height, og:image:alt). Declaring the image size lets some platforms render the card on the first share instead of waiting until the image has been downloaded.

X reads its own twitter: tags but falls back to the Open Graph title, description and image when the X versions are missing, so the tool only adds what X really needs: twitter:card, the optional accounts and the image description. That avoids duplicating every value.

Image sizes that work everywhere

Use Recommended size Notes
Large card (Facebook, LinkedIn, X large image) 1200 × 630 px Ratio about 1.91:1; keep text in the centre
Small X card (summary) at least 144 × 144 px Shown as a square, cropped from the centre
Minimum on Facebook 200 × 200 px Smaller images may be ignored

Use JPEG or PNG, keep the file reasonably small (well under 5 MB) and avoid putting important text near the edges, because each platform crops slightly differently. The previews in this tool are approximations of those layouts, not screenshots.

After publishing

Social platforms cache link previews, sometimes for days. After you change the tags, ask them to scrape the page again with the Facebook Sharing Debugger or the LinkedIn Post Inspector. The page must be publicly reachable: crawlers cannot see pages behind a login or on localhost.

Frequently asked questions

Do Open Graph tags improve SEO?

Not directly. Search engines don’t use them as a ranking factor. They improve how your links look when shared, which can bring more clicks and visits from social networks and messaging apps.

Why does my old image still appear when I share the link?

The platform cached the previous version. Re-scrape the URL with the platform’s debugging tool, or add a query string to the image URL (for example ?v=2) so it is treated as a new file.

Should I use summary or summary_large_image?

Use “Large image (summary_large_image)” for articles, products and landing pages with a strong visual. Use “Small square image (summary)” when your image is a logo or an avatar that would look odd stretched across a wide card.

Can I use a relative image URL like /images/share.jpg?

No. Crawlers read the tags out of context, so og:image and og:url must be absolute URLs including the protocol and domain. The tool flags relative addresses.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The picture you choose for the preview is read only by your browser and is never sent anywhere. The tags themselves only contain the image URL you typed.
