Meme Generator
Make a meme from your own picture with classic top and bottom text, white letters and black outline, auto-sized to fit. Free, in your browser, no upload.
How to make a meme
- Drop your own image on the drop zone, or click it to choose one: a photo from your phone, a screenshot, a drawing. The preview appears right away.
- Type the Top text and the Bottom text. You can fill in one or both. Press Enter to force a line break.
- Keep ALL CAPS ticked for the classic look, or untick it to keep your own capitalization.
- Choose the Font. Impact is the traditional meme font; if your device doesn’t have it, the text falls back to Liberation Sans Bold, which is served with this tool.
- Adjust the Text color, the Outline color, the Maximum text size (share of width) and the Outline thickness.
- Choose JPG or PNG under Format and click Download meme. The meme is saved at the full resolution of your picture.
The classic meme style, automatically
The “image macro” format that became popular in the 2000s follows a few simple rules: bold condensed capitals, white letters with a black outline so the text reads on any background, one caption at the top and the punchline at the bottom. This tool applies them for you.
Long captions are wrapped automatically over several lines, within a small margin from the edges. The text starts at the maximum size you set (10 % of the image width by default) and shrinks step by step until it fits in the top or bottom 30 % of the picture, so a long sentence never covers the whole image. The outline thickness is a percentage of the font size, so it stays in proportion when the text shrinks.
Your own images only
This meme generator works with pictures you provide. It has no library of famous meme templates: those images are usually photos, film stills or drawings protected by copyright, and their reuse depends on the law of your country and on how you share the result. Using your own photos, screenshots of your own work or pictures you have the right to use avoids the question entirely, and gives more original memes.
Before sharing a meme with a recognisable person in it, make sure they’re fine with it, especially for pictures of friends, colleagues or children.
Tips for a good meme
- Keep it short: a meme is read in a second. Setup on top, punchline at the bottom.
- Pick a picture with calm areas at the top and bottom, such as sky, wall or floor, so the text doesn’t hide faces.
- Square or 4:5 pictures work best on social networks. Crop your picture first if needed.
- For sharing, choose JPG: the file is much smaller. Choose PNG if you want perfectly crisp letters or plan to edit the meme again.
Frequently asked questions
Is this meme generator free and without watermark?
Yes. The downloaded meme contains only your picture and your text, without any logo or watermark.
Why is my text getting smaller?
Your caption is too long to fit at the maximum size in the top or bottom band, so it is reduced to fit. Shorten the text or raise Maximum text size (share of width).
Why doesn't the text look like Impact?
Impact is a system font, preinstalled on Windows and macOS but often missing on Android and Linux. On those devices, the text is drawn with Liberation Sans Bold instead. You can also choose another font in the list.
Can I use a GIF?
The first frame of a GIF is used and the meme is saved as a still JPG or PNG image. Animated memes are not supported.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The meme is drawn in your browser and your picture never leaves your device.
