How to use the Lorem ipsum generator

1. In Text, choose Classic Lorem ipsum (Latin) or French filler text.
2. In Generate, pick what to count: Paragraphs, Sentences, Words or List items, then set the Amount (up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 5,000 words or 200 list items).
3. Keep Start with the classic opening ticked if the text should begin with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” (or with the French opening sentence). Untick it for text that starts at random.
4. Tick HTML output to get ready-to-paste markup: each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags, or list items in a <ul> with one <li> per item. Leave it unticked for plain text, with a blank line between paragraphs.
5. Click Generate text for a new version. The word and character counts appear under the result; use Copy or Download (.txt, or .html in HTML mode).

The text changes every time you change an option, so you can quickly try a few lengths until the layout looks right.

What is Lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is the standard placeholder text of printing and design. It comes from a passage of De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written by Cicero in 45 BC. The words were cut, shuffled and altered over time, so the text looks like Latin but means nothing. That is exactly the point: readers are not distracted by the meaning, and designers can judge the typography, the length of lines and the balance of a page before the real content exists. The original text is centuries old and in the public domain.

This tool builds sentences of 6 to 14 words from the usual Lorem ipsum vocabulary, adds a comma now and then, and groups 4 to 7 sentences into each paragraph. List items are short groups of 3 to 8 words without a final period, which look like menu entries or bullet points.

French filler text

Latin filler has one weakness: word lengths and letter frequencies are not those of French. Accents, apostrophes and longer words change how a paragraph wraps. The French filler text option uses neutral French sentences written for this tool (a morning in town, a garden, a library, a train arriving on time…). Sentences are drawn in random order without repeating until all of them have been used, so the result reads naturally and gives a realistic idea of a French page. In Words mode the words are taken in reading order from those sentences.

Tips

• For a web mockup, generate with HTML output and paste straight into your template.
• To test a title or a button, use Words with an amount of 2 to 8.
• For a CMS or a word processor, plain text is usually better: each blank line becomes a new paragraph.
• Always replace placeholder text before publishing: search engines and visitors see it as unfinished content.
