How to count business days
- Choose a Start date and an End date. Both dates are counted; untick Count the start date to start counting the next day. Swap dates exchanges them and Today puts today’s date in the start field.
- Under Public holidays, pick Canada (federal), a province or territory, the United States (federal), or None (weekends only).
- For Canada, Weekend holidays give a day off on the next weekday adds the substitute day off when a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. For Quebec, you can switch to Easter Monday instead of Good Friday, since the employer chooses one of the two.
- Adjust the Weekend days if your week isn’t Monday to Friday, and add your own closures under Custom holidays, one per line:
2026-12-24 Office closedfor one year, or12-24 Christmas Evefor every year.
The results show the Business days, Calendar days, Weekend days and Holidays on weekdays, followed by the list of every holiday in the period. A holiday that falls on a weekend is listed but not subtracted twice.
How holidays are calculated
This tool doesn’t use a yearly list: it computes each holiday from its legal rule, so it works for any year. Fixed dates (Canada Day, Christmas…) are simple. The others follow these rules:
- Easter: Easter Sunday is computed with the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm (2025: April 20; 2026: April 5; 2027: March 28). Good Friday is two days before, Easter Monday the day after.
- Victoria Day and Quebec’s National Patriots’ Day: the Monday before May 25 (May 18 in 2026).
- Nth weekday rules: Family Day, Louis Riel Day, Islander Day and Nova Scotia Heritage Day are the third Monday of February; the civic holidays of August (B.C. Day, Saskatchewan Day, New Brunswick Day…) the first Monday of August; Yukon’s Discovery Day the third Monday of August; Labour Day the first Monday of September; Canadian Thanksgiving the second Monday of October (October 12 in 2026); US Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of November.
- Weekend holidays: when July 1 is a Sunday, Canada Day is on July 2; in Quebec, June 24 on a Sunday moves to June 25. For the US, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after (so January 1 on a Saturday is observed on December 31). For Canada, the substitute option moves a weekend holiday to the next free weekday (Christmas on Saturday: Monday 27, Boxing Day Tuesday 28). Saskatchewan only moves Sunday holidays, and Alberta has no substitute day.
- Recent holidays start in the right year: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30) from 2021 federally, 2022 in P.E.I., the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, 2023 in B.C. and Yukon, and 2024 in Manitoba; Juneteenth from 2021 in the US. B.C. Family Day was the second Monday of February from 2013 to 2018.
Holidays included
The lists are the general (statutory) holidays of employment standards laws, which apply to most employees. Collective agreements, the federal public service (which also has Easter Monday and a civic holiday), banks and schools may have more days off: add them as custom holidays. Sources, checked in September 2026: Canada Labour Code, s. 166 and federal labour standards; Alberta; British Columbia; Manitoba; New Brunswick; Newfoundland and Labrador; Nova Scotia; Ontario; Quebec (CNESST); Saskatchewan; Northwest Territories; Nunavut; Yukon; US: 5 U.S.C. 6103 and OPM federal holidays.
Holiday laws change: always confirm deadlines that have legal or financial consequences with the authority concerned.
Frequently asked questions
Are the start and end dates included?
Yes, both are counted by default, like the NETWORKDAYS function of spreadsheets. Untick Count the start date to count only the days after it, for example to count a notice period starting tomorrow.
Which Canadian holidays apply everywhere?
New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day (Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador), Labour Day and Christmas Day are general holidays in every province and territory. The others depend on where you work.
Is Remembrance Day a business day?
It depends. November 11 is a general holiday under federal law and in most provinces and territories, but not in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba or Nova Scotia, where it is counted as a business day.
Can I use a Friday–Saturday weekend or a six-day week?
Yes. Tick the days that aren’t worked under Weekend days: any combination is possible as long as at least one day is worked.
What about US state holidays?
Only the 11 US federal holidays are built in. Add state or company holidays, such as the day after Thanksgiving, under Custom holidays.
