How to create a WhatsApp link

  1. Pick the Country code of the number, or choose Already in the number (+…) if you type it in international format.
  2. Type the WhatsApp number as you normally write it: spaces, dashes, dots and parentheses are fine. A number that starts with +, 00 (or 011 in North America) is treated as already international.
  3. Optionally write a Prefilled message. It appears in the chat box when someone opens the link; they still have to press Send themselves.
  4. Copy the WhatsApp link to paste into a social profile, an email, a text or a button on your website, or copy the HTML link to drop into a web page. Change the Link text to control the words people click.
  5. Click Open the link to check it on your own phone or computer, and tick Show a QR code if you want a code for a flyer, a menu or a shop window. Download PNG gives a 1024-pixel image, Download SVG a vector file that stays sharp at any print size.

Load example fills in a sample restaurant booking and Clear empties the form. Everything is built in your browser: the number and the message are never sent anywhere.

How the wa.me link is built

WhatsApp’s official click-to-chat format is https://wa.me/<number>?text=<message>. The number must be in full international form (the E.164 standard) but written with digits only: no +, no spaces, no leading zeros. For a Montreal number, (514) 555-0123 becomes 15145550123; for a French mobile, 06 12 34 56 78 becomes 33612345678.

This tool does that conversion for you:

  • It removes every character that is not a digit.
  • It adds the country code you selected, unless the number already starts with + or an international prefix.
  • For countries where national numbers begin with a trunk 0 (France, Belgium, Switzerland, the UK, Germany, Morocco and others in the list), that 0 is dropped after the country code, as international dialing requires. Italy and Côte d’Ivoire keep their leading 0, because it is part of the number there.
  • For North America, an 11-digit number that already starts with 1 is not given a second 1.

The message is percent-encoded as UTF-8: spaces become %20, line breaks %0A, and accents, &, ? and emoji are encoded so they arrive exactly as typed. The Number used line under the outputs shows the final international number so you can double-check it.

Checks

The Checks list warns you when the number has no country code, when it has fewer than 7 digits or more than the 15 that E.164 allows, when letters were ignored (such as “ext. 4”: extensions do not exist on WhatsApp), and when the link passes 2,000 characters, a length some apps may cut.

If you leave the number empty and write only a message, the link becomes https://wa.me/?text=…. Opening it lets the sender choose any contact or group to share the message with, which is handy for “share this with a friend” buttons.

Frequently asked questions

Does the number have to be a WhatsApp account?

Yes. The link opens a chat with whatever account uses that number. If nobody has registered it on WhatsApp, the app shows an error saying the number is not on WhatsApp. A WhatsApp Business number works exactly like a personal one.

Is the message sent automatically?

No. The prefilled text only appears in the input box. The person can edit it or delete it before pressing Send. Nothing is sent without their action, and this tool never sends anything either.

Why does my link say the phone number is invalid?

Usually the country code is missing or a national 0 was left in. Check the Number used line: it must start with the country code (1 for Canada and the United States, 33 for France, 32 for Belgium…) followed by the number without its leading 0.

Does the link work on a computer?

Yes. On a computer it opens WhatsApp Desktop if it is installed, or offers to continue in WhatsApp Web. On a phone it opens the app directly.

Can I use the QR code in print?

Yes. For print, prefer the SVG file, which scales without blurring, and leave a white margin around the code. Keep the message short: a longer link makes a denser QR code that is harder to scan from a distance.
