Speed, Distance and Time Calculator
Find the speed, the distance or the travel time from the other two, in km/h, mph, m/s or knots and km, miles, metres or nautical miles, with the steps.
h:mm:ss (1:45:30), h:mm (1:45) or decimal hours (1.75).

How to use the speed, distance and time calculator
- Under Solve for, choose what you want to find: Speed, Distance or Time. The matching field is greyed out.
- Fill in the two other fields and pick their units: - Speed in km/h, mph, m/s or knots; - Distance in km, miles, metres or nautical miles; - Time as h:mm:ss (1:45:30), h:mm (1:45) or decimal hours (1.75).
- The Result appears as you type, in the unit you selected for it, with the other units just below. Copy result copies the main line.
The All values table lists the speed, the distance and the time in every unit, plus the pace per km and per mile. The Steps show the conversion to SI units and the formula. Everything is calculated in your browser.
The speed, distance and time formulas
The three quantities are linked by one relation, the “distance equals speed times time” triangle:
- Speed = distance ÷ time
- Distance = speed × time
- Time = distance ÷ speed
The only trap is units: km/h must go with km and hours, m/s with metres and seconds. To avoid mistakes, the tool converts everything to metres per second, metres and seconds first, solves, then converts the result back. The conversions are exact: 1 km/h = 1,000 ÷ 3,600 m/s, 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s (1 mile = 1,609.344 m), 1 knot = 1,852 m per hour (one nautical mile per hour).
Worked examples
- Travel time. 150 km at an average of 90 km/h: 150 ÷ 90 = 1.6667 h, or 1:40:00.
- Average speed. 120 miles driven in 2 hours (2:00): 120 ÷ 2 = 60 mph, about 96.56 km/h.
- Distance. A boat at 12 knots for 2.5 hours covers 12 × 2.5 = 30 nautical miles, about 55.56 km.
- Pace. At 90 km/h a car takes 40 seconds per km, or 1:04 per mile.
Tips
- Use average speed, not the speed limit. Stops, traffic and slow sections make the real average much lower than the cruising speed, so a trip planned at 100 km/h often averages 80 to 85 km/h.
- To convert decimal hours by hand, multiply the decimal part by 60: 1.75 h = 1 h + 0.75 × 60 min = 1 h 45 min. The tool accepts both forms, so you don’t need to.
- For running, walking or cycling pace per km or per mile, the running pace calculator adds race time predictions and splits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for speed, distance and time?
Speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranged, distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed. Keep the units consistent, for example km, hours and km/h.
How do I calculate travel time?
Divide the distance by the average speed. Choose Time under Solve for, enter the distance and the speed, and the tool shows the result as h:mm:ss and in decimal hours.
How do I enter 1 hour 30 minutes?
Type 1:30, 1:30:00 or 1.5. Two numbers separated by a colon are read as hours and minutes; three as hours, minutes and seconds.
What is a knot?
One nautical mile per hour, exactly 1.852 km/h or about 1.151 mph. It is used at sea and in aviation because a nautical mile corresponds to one minute of latitude.
Why does my GPS show a different average speed?
The tool uses the distance and time you enter. A GPS may exclude stops (moving average) or measure a slightly different distance, so both figures can be correct for different definitions.
