Online Notepad

Free online notepad that autosaves plain-text notes in your browser. Several notes, word count, find and replace, focus mode, .txt import and export.

Notes are kept only in this browser on this device. They are not synced or backed up, and they are not encrypted: anyone using this browser profile can read them. Clearing your browsing data deletes them, so export anything important.

How to use the online notepad

  1. Start typing in the large text box. There is no Save button: a moment after you stop typing, the note is written to your browser’s local storage, and the line under the counters shows the time of the last save.
  2. Give the note a name in Note title. If you leave it empty, the list shows the first line of the note instead.
  3. Click New note to start another page. All your notes appear under Your notes, the most recently edited first; click one to open it. You can keep up to 200 notes.
  4. The counters show Words, Characters, characters Without spaces and Lines as you type.
  5. Export .txt downloads the open note as a plain-text file named after its title. Import .txt opens a text file from your computer as a new note. Delete note removes the open note after a confirmation.
  6. Open Find and replace to search the note, jump to each match with Find next, change one match with Replace, or all of them at once with Replace all. Tick Match case or Whole words only to narrow the search.
  7. Focus mode hides everything except the title and the text and fills the screen, for distraction-free writing. Press Esc or click Exit focus mode to come back.

Where your notes are stored (and where they are not)

This notepad keeps your notes in the local storage of the browser you are using, on this device only. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and nothing is synchronised. That has consequences you should know about:

  • This browser only. A note written in Chrome on your laptop does not appear in Firefox, on your phone, or on another computer. If you need a note elsewhere, export it as .txt.
  • Clearing browsing data deletes your notes. “Clear cookies and site data”, some cleaning utilities and uninstalling the browser all erase local storage. Private or incognito windows forget everything when they close; if the browser blocks storage, the tool tells you so at the top.
  • No encryption. Notes are stored as plain text. Anyone who uses the same computer account and browser profile can open this page and read them, and so can software with access to your profile. Do not keep passwords, card numbers or other secrets here.
  • Limited space. Browsers give each site roughly 5 MB of local storage. That is several million characters of text, but if it fills up, the tool shows an error instead of silently losing your work.

If you have the page open in two tabs, the list stays in step: a change saved in one tab appears in the other. Avoid typing in the same note in both tabs at once, because the last save wins.

Tips for plain-text notes

Plain text is the most durable format there is: any device can open a .txt file, today and in twenty years. Use this pad for shopping lists, meeting notes, drafts of emails or posts, snippets you copy often, or text you want to clean of formatting before pasting it elsewhere (paste it here, then copy it again). Exported files use UTF-8, so accents and emoji are kept. For formatted documents with headings and links, a Markdown editor is a better fit; for counting words against a limit, the counters here work live.

Frequently asked questions

Are my notes saved automatically?

Yes. Each change is saved to this browser’s local storage less than half a second after you stop typing, and again when you close or leave the tab. The time of the last save is shown under the counters.

Can I get my notes on another device?

Not automatically: there is no cloud copy and no sync. Use Export .txt on the first device and Import .txt on the other, or send the file to yourself.

Why did my notes disappear?

Most often because the browser’s data for this site was cleared, the notes were written in a private window, or you are using a different browser or profile. Notes cannot be recovered once the browser has deleted them, so export important ones regularly.

Is the notepad private?

Your text never leaves your device, but it is not encrypted. People who share your computer account and browser can read it. For confidential text, encrypt it with a dedicated tool before storing it.

What files can I import?

Plain-text files up to 2 MB, such as .txt, .md, .csv or .log. The file becomes a new note titled with the file name. Word documents and PDFs are not plain text and cannot be imported.

How are words and characters counted?

Words are runs of letters or digits, and “l’homme” or “well-known” count as one word. Characters are what you see on screen, so an accented letter or an emoji counts as one, and line breaks count as characters.
