    How to convert an image

    1. Drop your images on the drop zone or click it to choose them. PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, ICO and GIF files are read, along with any other format your browser can display (such as AVIF or SVG).
    2. Under Convert to, choose PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP or ICO.
    3. Adjust the options that appear for that format: - Quality for JPG and WebP; - Background for transparent areas for JPG and 24-bit BMP, since those formats cannot store transparency; - BMP color depth: 24-bit (no transparency) or 32-bit (keeps transparency); - Icon sizes (px) for ICO: tick the sizes to include in the icon file.
    4. Click Convert images. Each file gets a row with a preview, the size before and after, and a Download button. Download all saves every converted file.

    Which format should you choose?

    Format Compression Transparency Best for
PNG Lossless Yes Screenshots, logos, graphics, images you will edit again
JPG Lossy No Photos, email attachments, maximum compatibility
WebP Lossy Yes Web pages: smaller than JPG and PNG at similar quality
BMP None 32-bit only Old Windows software, embedded systems, raw pixel data
ICO PNG inside Yes Favicons and Windows icons

Going from PNG to JPG is the classic way to shrink a photo saved in the wrong format. Going from JPG to PNG does not improve quality: the details lost by JPG compression are gone, and the PNG will simply be larger. It is useful when a program requires PNG or when you want to edit the image without adding new JPG artifacts.

    About BMP and ICO output

Browsers can only encode PNG, JPG and WebP, so this tool includes its own small encoders for the other two formats.

BMP files are written uncompressed, row by row. The 24-bit option stores three bytes per pixel (blue, green, red) and paints transparent areas with the chosen background color. The 32-bit option adds an alpha channel and uses a BITMAPV4 header with color masks, so programs that support BMP transparency read it correctly. Expect large files: a 1920 × 1080 image is about 6 MB in 24-bit.

ICO files hold one image per size. Each size is drawn as a square with the picture centered, and stored as PNG inside the icon, a variant supported by Windows since Vista and by every current browser. For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs and shortcuts; add 256 for high-resolution Windows icons. Start from a square image with simple shapes: fine details disappear at 16 × 16.

    Privacy and metadata

Your files never leave your device: images are decoded and re-encoded locally in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Because each image is redrawn before being saved, the converted file contains no EXIF metadata such as camera details or GPS location. Animated GIF and WebP files are converted using their first frame only.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I convert WebP to JPG or PNG?

Yes. Drop the WebP files, choose JPG or PNG under Convert to and click Convert images. This is handy when an app or website does not accept WebP.

    How do I make a favicon.ico from a PNG?

Choose ICO, keep sizes 16, 32 and 48 ticked (add 256 if you also want a large Windows icon), and convert. Rename the file to favicon.ico if needed and place it at the root of your site.

Why does my transparent PNG get a white background in JPG?

JPG has no transparency channel, so transparent pixels must be filled with a color. Change Background for transparent areas to pick another color, or choose PNG, WebP, 32-bit BMP or ICO to keep the transparency.

Can this tool open HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Only if your browser can display HEIC, which is currently the case in Safari. In other browsers, use the HEIC to JPG tool, which includes a dedicated decoder.

    Does converting reduce quality?

Converting to PNG, BMP or ICO is lossless from the decoded image. Converting to JPG or WebP applies lossy compression set by the Quality slider; at 90 % the difference is very hard to see.
