How it was calculated
How to use the crypto profit calculator
- Under I know, choose The quantity of coins if you know how many coins or tokens you bought, or The amount invested if you know how much cash you spent.
- Enter the Quantity (coins) or the Amount invested (fee included). Quantities with many decimals, such as 0.00012345 BTC, are kept exactly.
- Type the Buy price per coin and the Sell price per coin. This tool does not fetch live prices: enter the price you paid and the price you sold at (or the current price, to see an unrealized gain).
- For the Buy fee and the Sell fee, pick % of the trade (for example 0.1 for a 0.1 % trading fee) or Fixed amount (for example a 2.99 flat fee), then enter the value. Leave 0 when there is no fee.
- Choose the Currency used for the prices.
The results update as you type: Profit or loss, ROI, Break-even sell price, the number of Coins, the Total cost, the Net proceeds, the Total fees and the Price change of the coin itself. Copy summary copies all the figures, and How it was calculated lists every step.
The formulas
With a quantity q, a buy price B and a sell price S:
- Total cost = q × B + buy fee (a percentage fee is q × B × rate)
- Net proceeds = q × S − sell fee (a percentage fee is q × S × rate)
- Profit or loss = net proceeds − total cost
- ROI = profit ÷ total cost × 100
- Break-even sell price = (total cost + fixed sell fee) ÷ q, or total cost ÷ (q × (1 − sell fee %)) with a percentage sell fee
When you enter the amount invested instead, the fee is taken out of that amount first: with a 1 % fee, 1,000 buys 1,000 ÷ 1.01 = 990.10 worth of coins, and the quantity is that value divided by the buy price.
Example: you buy 0.5 BTC at 60,000 and sell it at 68,000, with a 0.1 % fee on each trade. The total cost is 30,030 (30,000 + 30 in fees), the net proceeds are 33,966 (34,000 − 34), so the profit is 3,936 and the ROI 13.11 %. The coin rose 13.33 %, but the fees eat part of that gain. To break even you would have to sell above 60,120.12, not 60,000.
Why fees matter so much in crypto
Exchange fees look small, but they apply twice, on the way in and on the way out, and they add up quickly when you trade often. A 0.5 % “spread” on a simple buy-and-sell app plus a 0.5 % sell fee means the price must rise by about 1 % just to recover your money. Fixed fees hurt even more on small trades: a 2.99 fee on a 50 purchase is already 6 %. Network (gas or withdrawal) fees also count; add them as a fixed amount if you want a complete picture.
Precision and limits
All calculations use arbitrary-precision decimal arithmetic, so tiny prices (0.00001234) and huge token quantities give exact results; only the display is rounded. This tool works on a single buy and a single sell. It does not know the market price, it does not annualize the return, and it does not calculate taxes. In many countries (Canada, the United States, France…) selling or swapping crypto is a taxable event, and the cost basis rules differ from country to country. The results are estimates, not financial or tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate crypto profit?
Multiply the quantity by the sell price and subtract the sell fee to get your net proceeds, then subtract what you paid, including the buy fee. The difference is your profit or loss, and dividing it by the total cost gives your ROI.
What is the break-even price in crypto?
It is the sell price at which you neither gain nor lose once both fees are paid. Because of the fees, it is always a little higher than your buy price.
Should I enter the quantity or the amount invested?
Use whichever you know. If your exchange shows “you spent 500 including fees”, pick The amount invested; if it shows “you received 0.0083 BTC”, pick The quantity of coins.
Can I use it for altcoins and meme coins with tiny prices?
Yes. Prices like 0.00001234 and quantities in the millions are handled exactly, and the break-even price is shown with enough decimals to be useful.
Does the calculator include taxes?
No. Capital gains tax depends on your country, your income and the holding period. Use the profit shown here as the starting point and check the official rules or a tax professional.
Why is my ROI lower than the price change?
The price change only compares the two prices. The ROI also accounts for the buy and sell fees, which reduce the gain (or deepen the loss).
